Essential oils has become a popular topic in holistic healing and I wondered (and you may be wondering too) what Ayurveda’s take on the topic is?  Just like foods, essential oils possess some combination of the five elements and have qualities that either help or imbalance an individual.  Thus, the use of essential oils is definitely recommended when practicing an Ayurvedic lifestyle as long as it is done properly.

It is essential to know the basics of essential oil use in order to use them effectively. It is best to be under the care of a skilled professional but with essential oils being so readily available, it’s also okay to experiment as long as you’ve done your research.

  • Only use pure, high quality oils. There are many synthetic oils and fragrances sold today but only buy from a reputable brand. I have used oils from the doTerra brand and I know that those are “real”.
  • Avoid applying essential oils directly to the skin, always dilute with a carrier oil

                Best carrier oils by Dosha:

                                Vata – sesame, jojoba

                                Pitta – coconut, jojoba

                                Kapha – almond, sesame, sunflower

  • Never ingest essential oils
  • It is best to inhale essential oils but avoid prolonged exposure if you’re not in an area with good air circulation
  • Store essential oils in a cool area

Some Ways to use Essential oils:

Massage– Take 6-12 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of carrier oil to make massage oil.

Direct Inhalation– Place 1 drop of essential oil directly on the palm, rub together, and breathe in.

Steam– Place 2-3 drops of essential oil in a pot of boiling water and inhale the steam. Place a towel over the head to contain the steam.

Diffusers– Each diffuser is different so use as directed.

Shower/Bath – Add 8-10 drops of essential oil to bath water or splash on the tiles surrounding your bathtub. In a shower, this will create steam inhalation. In a bath, you will enjoy a relaxing aroma as you bathe.

Compress– Add 4-5 drops of essential oil to a bucket of hot water. Soak towel in the water and apply to skin.

Essential Oils by Dosha

Vata Dosha (warming oils that have a sweet or spiced scent): Clove, Geranium, Cinnamon, Chamomile

Pitta Dosha (cooling oils that are soothing and astringent): Fennel, Lime, Vanilla, Sandalwood

Kapha Dosha (cooling oils that are refreshing): Peppermint, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Rosemary

Daily use of essential oils can lead to imbalances within the body so it is best to discuss your use with a skilled professional.

Namaste.
